How “real” are we? Judging ingroup entitativity

William J. Bingley and Katharine H. Greenaway

Chapter 14 in Research Handbook on Social Judgment, 2026, pp 228-243 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: There is a large body of social psychological research concerning judgments of group entitativity—the “groupness” of a collection of people. In the present chapter we review this literature with a particular focus on the perceived entitativity of ingroups, that is, groups as viewed “from the inside” by group members. Applying a social identity perspective suggests that perceived ingroup entitativity is shaped by factors relating to: (1) the perceiver and their relationship to the ingroup; (2) features of the ingroup and ingroup members; and (3) the intergroup context (including outgroups and their relation to the ingroup). From this perspective, group identification plays a key role, both as a predictor of perceived ingroup entitativity and also as a moderator of other factors. We discuss the implications of ingroup entitativity judgments for group processes, intergroup relations, and individuals.
