To Dean, or not to Dean, that is the question

Chapter 37 in How to Keep Your Research Project on Track, 2024, pp 220-228 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter is an illustration of how taking up a senior academic leadership position poses an existential threat to research, relationships and reputation. Based on my own experience of being a mother, research-focused academic and a Dean, I offer insights, reflections and some critical questions for those who are either in, or considering taking up, a senior leadership position whilst maintaining a research career. The chapter will not present research as a scientific, linear process that follows logical and clearly defined stages to completion but instead will focus on the often chaotic, fraught and frustrating reality of keeping research projects on track; in and amongst real life.
