The PhD supervisor-candidate relationship

Jillian Cavanagh, Hannah Meacham and Timothy Bartram

Chapter 4 in How to Keep Your Research Project on Track, 2024, pp 28-35 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The supervisor-candidate relationship is one of the most important aspects of PhD candidature. Here we present author reflections that offer understandings of the pitfalls and challenges and strategies associated with successful PhD supervision and candidate relationships. We offer insights into the key issues and challenges such as scholarly writing, study skills and work-life balance; how to begin the process and set up foundations for success; and when and what to publish. At the end of the chapter, we detail key lessons for both supervisors and PhD students. To build the resourceful, confident and innovative academics of tomorrow, we need to start with our PhD students of today.
