Benefits, pitfalls, ethics and realities of GenAI in research

Jerome Kiley

Chapter 6 in How to Keep Your Research Project on Track, 2024, pp 43-57 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores how GenAI can be used in all aspects of the research process. GenAI’s capabilities are unprecedented but include challenges such as bias, ethical dilemmas, and skill loss. The need for the informed and responsible use of GenAI is emphasised that it is not at the expense of the researcher’s authentic role and critical thinking. The dynamic nature of GenAI ethics is discussed, with researchers encouraged to stay abreast of evolving policies while actively reflecting on potential ethical issues. The scepticism surrounding the limitations of GenAI is acknowledged; however, its potential to enhance research productivity and quality is emphasised. Valuable insights are provided regarding GenAIs and academic research’s evolving intersection, with researchers encouraged to embrace a critical and ethical mindset when navigating this landscape.
