Promoting agri-food system transformation and poverty eradication

Mingxing Sun and Shaoyue Ma

Chapter 2 in The Elgar Companion to Food System Transformation for Sustainable Development, 2026, pp 9-22 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Eradicating poverty and hunger are important interconnected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and can be realised simultaneously. This chapter aims to illustrate the current status and threats of the poverty and agri-food system, analyse their relationship, and provide suggestions on how to promote the transformation of the agri-food system and reduce poverty. It is found that the agri-food system in poverty-stricken areas is highly vulnerable and hunger occurs frequently. Climate change, regional conflicts, the pandemic, lack of agricultural means of production, and other factors restrict the sustainable transformation of the agri-food system in poverty-stricken areas. There is a mutual influence and restriction between the agri-food system and poverty. It is necessary to promote the transformation of the agri-food system in poor areas and reduce the occurrence of poverty by stabilising land property rights, increasing agricultural investment, promoting technological innovation, and encouraging non-agricultural employment of smallholders.
