Abstract:
Land degradation is a major issue in arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya. The problem has been exacerbated by climate change and unsustainable land use practices that ultimately undermine the food security of communities. Promotion of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) proved to be an effective strategy in rehabilitating degraded land, increasing fodder and forage availability, and enhancing food security and income of participating communities through increased livestock production. FMNR also created new income opportunities, such as beekeeping, and further incentivised its adoption. The approach also proved to be a strategy for disaster risk reduction by enhancing water retention, reducing run-off, and increasing the availability of fodder during the lean season. It was realised that more emphasis on animal health may have further strengthened pastoral livelihoods and generated impacts at scale by engaging wider communities, civil society, and government stakeholders in FMNR in private as well as communal lands.
