Abstract:
The Andean-Amazon foothills region is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, providing local ecosystem services such as food, water, climate regulation, water purification, and carbon absorption. However, the region faces threats from conventional agriculture and livestock grazing (monocultures and extensive cattle ranching). These unsustainable agricultural activities contribute to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and water pollution, exacerbating the effects of climate change. This chapter presents a case study that assesses the farming diversification (agrobiodiversity and farming activities) and agricultural management practices of 215 households in Yurimaguas, Loreto department of Peru, during 2016 and 2017. The results revealed that most households primarily engaged in unsustainable agriculture and cattle ranching. They demonstrated low levels of agrobiodiversity, few farming activities, and low implementation of agroecological management practices. These findings emphasise the need for increased funding, training, and support for rural households to facilitate pathways towards a transition to sustainable farming systems.
