Chapter 25 in The Elgar Companion to Food System Transformation for Sustainable Development, 2026, pp 329-346 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Food insecurity is rapidly rising, driven by violent conflict and climate change. Compounding this challenge, the escalation of violent conflicts and intensification of climate change are, in part, fueled by the escalating levels of food insecurity. This chapter explores the relationship between food insecurity, violent conflict, and climate change, examining the emerging feedback loops and their effects on global stability. It argues that the solution to reducing world hunger lies in addressing these interlinkages in a comprehensive manner that aligns the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 2 (zero hunger), SDG 13 (climate action), and SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions). It is essential to recognise that policy responses must be as interconnected as the problems they seek to address and the crises they seek to manage and prevent. The transformation of food systems is paramount, ensuring a more equitable and sustainable availability of food and playing a pivotal role in severing the nexus between violent conflict and food insecurity, along with their connections to environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity.
