 Toward participatory and educative research practices in anthropology and education1Frederick Erickson Chapter 18 in Research Handbook on the Anthropology of Education, 2026, pp 181-188 from Edward Elgar Publishing Abstract: This chapter advocates for participatory action research as an especially appropriate approach for inquiry and action in the anthropology of education. It begins with an overview of the development of action research across the second half of the twentieth century, continuing to the present time. It proceeds by considering three main affordances: First, what involvement in improvement efforts contributes to analytic insights—better inquiry. Second, relationships of power between researchers, research subjects, and research audiences—movement toward more equal status relations among collaborators. Third, greater time depth—study and action efforts persisting beyond a single annual cycle. A major tension is that between advocacy within a local setting and the critique of practices that take place there. Major themes are that participatory action research processes are fundamentally educative for local practitioners and outsider researchers and that this research approach involves ethically responsible and respectful relations among participants, including research subjects.
