Multi-situated anthropology of education in international settings

Abstract: In this chapter, we first review the dilemmas facing ethnographers of education, given the methodological debates and developments over the past four decades. Then, building on key concepts from what academics like Sunder Rajan calls a “multi-situated stance,” we consider how researchers based in US institutions might address these dilemmas in projects completed in international settings that experience pressure from US foreign policy and aid persistence. Specifically, we employ three contemporary ethnographic projects to reconsider relationality, comparison, conjuncture, and scale.
