The power of ethnography to open worlds different from your own

Abstract: Ethnography has the power to transform our view of the world and ourselves by capturing a glimpse of the world through other people's eyes. It also has transformed my practice of teaching Ethnography and that of my students who are mostly teachers themselves. This chapter advocates that Anthropology can make a significant contribution to Education by informing education practitioners how to properly use ethnographic techniques in their practice. This means guiding them to use ethnographic tools in ways significant for them while still retaining the main tenets of anthropology. In this way, they can learn by doing it in their environments and for their own objectives and interests. With this in mind, I share here what worked well for me and my students, how, and why.
