Cross-disciplinary research in the anthropology of education

Jessica Sujata Chandras

Chapter 20 in Research Handbook on the Anthropology of Education, 2026, pp 201-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Cross-disciplinary research poses challenges while also offering opportunities for enhancing the anthropology of education. Over the past three years, my team, composed of experts in anthropology, learning sciences, curriculum development, and linguistics, has collected and analyzed qualitative and ethnographic data on linguistic justice in education in India. Reflecting on my experiences, I explore key aspects of cross-disciplinary research in education for anthropologists and offer suggestions for navigating such projects. I define the scope of our research and discuss challenges that emerged while developing and implementing our collaboration through our attempts to explore translanguaging in our research, a process of meaning-making across the boundaries of named languages. Finally, I provide advice for anthropologists considering cross-disciplinary research and encourage reflection on how diverse disciplinary perspectives can enhance data collection, analysis, and findings. By combining our strengths and questioning disciplinary boundaries, we enrich our understanding and approach to educational research.
