Methodological innovations for collaborating with undergraduate STEM students in conducting ethnographic research

Abstract: This chapter describes methodological innovations that can foster a successful collaboration between faculty research leads and undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) student researchers. This collaboration took place in the context of a National Science Foundation-funded project studying how cultural practices within the University of Maryland's STS-LLC (Science, Technology, and Society Living Learning Community) supported the development of students’ macro-ethical reasoning. We outline the co-developed infrastructure and routines that enabled this partnership and highlight the positive outcomes. Blurring the lines between researcher and researched benefited the project, the individuals, and the resultant scholarship.
