Chapter 102 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 368-370 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Management history is a sub-field of historical organisation studies (HOS), or organisation and management studies (OMS), which focuses on the role of history in understanding management practices in organisations. It draws from both business history as well as history as a discipline and engages the related methodological approaches to conducting empirical research. An overview of the evolution of the sub-field, its applications in theory and practice and related opportunities and challenges are discussed.
