Manufacturing the Employee
Roy Jacques
Chapter 104 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 373-374 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Preceding the so-called historic turn in organisation studies by a decade, this book was and remains an attempt to de-centre the notion that the history of management knowledge is merely a story of a steadily increasing behavioural and technological body of knowledge about how to organise efficiently and effectively. It argues that `the employee’ is a culturally and historically specific product of American industrialisation – a product whose universalisation stands in the way of developing culturally and historically relevant organisational knowledge(s).
