Abstract: Archaeology as an approach to organizational studies aligns with an increasing emphasis on historical perspectives within management studies. Viewing organizations as multilayered systems that have been shaped by historical narratives, events and experiences, archaeology allows for the excavation of these layers and the discourses of organizational culture and change they reflect. Using archaeological processes as metaphors for methodological tools of qualitative analysis, researchers approach organizations as sites of historical inquiry. Key elements of this type of research include analysis of organizational artifacts, stratigraphy in the traces of organizational evolution and change, evidence of material culture and the construction of narratives representing organizational memory and collective knowledge over time.
