Nostalgia

Chapter 114 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 406-407 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Nostalgia is a pervasive, complex temporal construct imbued with emotion that recasts some aspect of the past, now lost, in contradistinction to the present. As such, nostalgia creates discontinuity across time. Surprisingly, however, it can also serve as the basis for temporal continuity, both personally and organisationally. Nostalgia is an aspect of rhetorical history and offers both greater context sensitivity as well as the ability to achieve greater representational truth in historical organisation studies. Nostalgia at the organisation level is illustrated by Strangleman's (1999) historical study of British Rail.
