Abstract: What is the past? In this entry, I define the past in opposition to another related, yet often conflated, one – history. I discuss how history, while drawing from the past, serves as a simplified story that inherently overlooks and sometimes invents what has come before. After discussing the differences between these constructs, I review distinct ways in which the past can be said to influence present realities by reviewing two approaches used in studying this influence. I close by highlighting the importance of studying the past.
