Chapter 12 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 48-52 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: How does one define an ‘archive’? I believe this is not possible and, quite frankly, goes against collaborate efforts to move past Eurocentric archival practices. Instead, the purpose of this entry is to act as a starting point for deeper and meaningful reflection as archives (un)learn, adapt and open space for healing. This entry considers the role of definitions and standards as well as existing scholarship on positionality, neutrality, descriptions and terminology. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's (TRC) Calls to Action, no. 69 and 70, prompted archives to reflect on ownership of and access to Indigenous records and conduct a review of archival policies and best practices (2015: 332–333). Archives are actively responding to decolonise archival practices and spaces – this remains a longstanding commitment.
