Abstract: Reflexivity in historical organisation studies is a methodological stance that draws on post-structural or postmodern traditions, embracing a critical awareness of the nature of knowledge produced through scholarly practice. It acknowledges that knowledge about the past is shaped by researchers’ identities, theoretical frameworks and the historical context from which it is examined. In historical organisation studies, its applications range from reflexive historical case studies, which use history to refine theory, to critical organisational history, which questions the scientific project. Ultimately, all accounts of the past require reflexivity, though the degree to which scholars recognise its impact on knowledge production varies.
