Abstract: In historical organisation studies (HOS), text is understood as a dynamic element embedded in organisational practices that structure knowledge, mediate interactions and legitimise discourses. The concept of ‘text’ has evolved from oral traditions to written forms, influencing communication and sensemaking. Different perspectives shape its interpretation: traditional views see text as a stable representation of organisational structures, while processual and practice-based approaches emphasise its evolving nature in social interactions. Critical and decolonial perspectives highlight its role in sustaining power asymmetries and epistemic coloniality. Understanding these perspectives is essential for methodological choices, influencing organisational analysis, historical narratives and ethical considerations.
