Chapter 145 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 517-519 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The study of textbooks is a growing stream of historical organisation research that creates a bridge among history, organisation studies and management learning and education. Textbooks are histories of academic fields. They are influential in shaping students’ understanding of fields, as well as how fields are practiced. Research on management and organisation textbooks challenges the portrayal of foundational theorists and dominant ideologies within the field, thereby creating a space to think about, and do, managing and organising differently.
