Abstract: Time is defined using a conceptual framework that entails three conditions, namely, modern time, postmodern time and amodern time. Time in a modern condition is ontologically real in that it exists outside of human experience and precedes the historian's study of it. It is said to be neutral and given in the order of things. Time in a postmodern condition is discursive and mediated through text, language and knowledge of the past. That we can undertake history through various epistemologies means that the past and time are plural. In an amodern condition, time is a dimension of actors and networks. Actors sensemaking of time, as they engage in their day-to-day practice, gives us clues about its composition. The entry gives three empirical examples of studies where time is featured. In the critical summary, the need to continue to study time is emphasised.
