Abstract: Emerging out of debates within the Management History Division of the Academy of Management, Work, Wealth, & Postmodernism pursues two lines of inquiry. The first, as its preface indicates, is “to defend what once needed no defence: the modern world with its universities, its immense wealth, and its deeply ingrained traditions of democracy”. The second, and more significant objective, is to trace the intellectual roots of both sides of current debates. For, as the preface also notes, “Although postmodernists attack” the “Western intellectual tradition . . . the roots of postmodernist thought” are themselves located within this tradition.
