Big data archival research

Chapter 16 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 62-64 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
‘Big data’ is defined by the volume (size), variety (structure) and velocity (speed of data generation and analysis) of the data. Big data archival research can draw on large databases of public company data and consider relationships between various variables that can be analysed with quantitative and mixed methods research. This entry provides a conceptual overview and details on one such large data set, Compustat Fundamentals, which can be accessed through the Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS). The entry gives two empirical examples of studies where big data archival research is featured. In the critical summary, final thoughts and considerations for the continued use of big data archival research is emphasised.
