Corporate history

Chapter 31 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 111-113 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Corporate history constitutes a distinct narrative genre serving both scholarly and strategic purposes. This article reviews its dual value: methodological, as a source for historical generalisations in business history, and phenomenological, as a cultural resource corporations use strategically. It also highlights tensions between academic rigour and corporate utility and explores corporate history's role in understanding the past and the future of organisations.
