Aesthetics

Gabrielle Durepos

Chapter 3 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 14-15 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Aesthetics in historical organisation studies is new; however, the study of visual and material evidence in historical practice is not (Jordanova 2012). Historical aesthetics is defined as understanding the past of organisations and management by using organisational actors’ sensory reactions to material stimuli and experiences. These reactions produce, among actors, emotional, visceral and cognitive interpretations of organisational pasts and histories that impact actor behaviour. Three examples where aesthetics is used in historical organisation studies are Burrell (1997), McKinlay (2002) and Corrigan (2016). Using aesthetics in history may broaden what is considered a valid historical record and help redress archival silences.
