Entrepreneurial and family business history

Abstract: In recent years the fields of entrepreneurship and family business have increasingly engaged with historical methods, theories and approaches. These have featured in a multitude of differing formats, including standalone articles (Wadhwani and Lubinski 2025; Suddaby et al. 2023; Wong and McGovern 2022), book chapters (MacKenzie and Wong 2024), or in a multitude of historically informed special issues in leading management journals (Wadhwani et al. 2020; Suddaby et al. 2023). This wave of publications was foregrounded by an influential piece by Wadhwani and Lubinski (2017) that called for the ‘reinvention’ of entrepreneurial history as a research field by developing new approaches that examine the development of entrepreneurial behaviours and practices over time but, crucially, examine the processes that drive entrepreneurship rather than focus solely on the individuals or institutions. Applying the core principles of the historical organisation studies (henceforth HOS) framework (notably ‘dual integrity’) to entrepreneurship and family business research provides scope for greater integration and cross-fertilisation between the two fields.
