Chapter 50 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 185-187 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
An event is a discreet occurrence or situation that is significant and is often retold as a story of what happened. Events are frequently the focus of, and highlighted in, management and organisational history studies, yet they are not theorised and studied as a concept drawing upon theories of events in history and sociology. The sociology of events and related empirical research is presented and the application of this work to organisational studies is examined, followed by a discussion of the potential opportunities and challenges in this translation and integration.
