The Evolution of Management Thought

Robert A. Lloyd

Chapter 53 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Historical Organisation Studies, 2026, pp 196-198 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This entry summarizes and critically evaluates the work of Daniel Wren and Arthur Bedeian, The Evolution of Management Thought (EMT). This book has been lauded as the canon of management history, and it sits on the shelves of most management historians today (Muldoon et. al 2023a). Their work provides a comprehensive examination of the nature of work itself, development of the modern organization and understandings of human behavior in the workplace. Specific emphasis is placed on the social and cultural background within a historical contextualization of each era of management thought they cover.
