Abstract: Feminism advocates gender equality by challenging patriarchy and systemic oppression. It is not monolithic but a diverse set of evolving theories and practices shaped by historical, cultural and social contexts. Traditionally framed through ‘waves’, this Western-centric periodisation is criticised for marginalising struggles from the Global South and other oppressed groups. Black, Indigenous, decolonial and queer feminisms highlight the need for intersectionality, which examines overlapping discriminations. Critiquing dominant narratives, feminism reshapes history, informs activism and challenges capitalist contradictions. Its application in academia, activism and policymaking requires reflexivity to ensure inclusivity and transformative impact.
