Abstract: Perhaps no topic in management has received as much attention (save perhaps Taylorism) as the Hawthorne studies, a series of studies conducted at the Western Electric Hawthorne Plant in Cicero, Illinois, from 1924 until 1932. The reasons for this attention are due to the deep and lasting influence of the human relations movement on management, as well as the methodological limitations and the political assumptions of the major scholars who participated in and directed the Hawthorne studies. This entry provides a brief overview of the studies, their influence criticisms and an explanation of their importance to modern management.
