Historic turn

Abstract: This entry begins with a definition of the historic turn within the humanities and social sciences (McDonald 1996) and its subsequent formulation in management organization studies (Clark and Rowlinson 2004). We trace the evolving usage of the phrase from the idea of potential pathways of transformation to reality taking place in management and organization theory. Five narrative interpretations of the historic turn are described. In the application section, two exemplary papers are presented, showing evolving integration of historical realism and social science qualitative methodology and techniques. The entry concludes with a review of three challenges to address in realizing continued convergence in the historic turn.
