Abstract: Historical embeddedness means placing social phenomena in general and organizational phenomena, in particular in their sociohistorical contexts. This allows management and organization scholars to understand how historical conditions shape organizations and how organizational, strategic and institutional changes are affected by historical forces and events. Historical embeddedness may be conceptualized and studied in different ways depending on the theoretical and empirical context. Vaara and Lamberg (2016) offer an example of three different approaches to studying historical embeddedness in strategy process and practice research: realist history (comparative history), interpretive history (microhistory) and post-structural history (Foucauldian genealogy).
