Chapter 1 in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 1-5 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter outlines the rationale, aims, structure and relevance of Sport Management in Europe: Perspectives and Implications for Practice. The chapter begins by emphasizing the challenging nature of defining sport from a European perspective, the complexity of fully grasping its reality due to the diversity of national contexts and the need for parsimonious and grounded perspectives that address the specific requirements of current and future sports managers, covering topics such as diversity, innovation, policy, sustainability and digitalization. The chapter stresses the added value of bridging the gap between theory and practical needs, as illustrated by the Handbook’s design, which combines analytical models, expert interviews, practical recommendations and complementary material. It then introduces the Handbook's four parts, which cover three employment sectors and related challenges. This contribution draws on the expertise of almost 60 specialists from various European countries. Coordinated by a network of four Swiss academic institutions, it offers a comprehensive and practical guide tailored to the European context and covers the strategic and operational dimensions of sport management. The chapter concludes by emphasizing that successful decision-making in European sport management must always be informed and context-specific.
