Chapter 9 in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 122-136 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the strategic importance of data management in professional sport organizations. It examines how data is transforming professional sport and how it empowers clubs and other sport organizations to make informed decisions, improve sporting performance and optimize business processes. The chapter begins by explaining why data management has become so important in sport and then describes a framework for organizing data management in sport organizations. Subsequent sections present the most typical actors, institutions and organizations involved in data management in the European sport ecosystem. An interview with Ursin Cola, the CEO and owner of Soul.Media AG, a leading provider of data management solutions for sport organizations, provides further insights into day-to-day practices. The chapter concludes by outlining the managerial implications of data's growing importance in sport and the data management skills and competencies that current and future sport managers must master.
