Public sector

Michaël Mrkonjic

A chapter in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 156-158 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Physical activity and sport are often considered to be public goods. They contribute to physical and mental health, the social inclusion of youth, economic development and national pride. For this reason, public institutions support the practice of physical activity and sport through legal frameworks and policy measures that are regularly adapted to reflect the evolution of society. The extent to which political steering influences physical activity and sport, both directly and indirectly, varies from country to country according to their history, culture, structure and resources, and includes European Union (EU) policies for member states. Part III of this Handbook explores sport management with five perspectives in the public sector: sport integrity; grassroots development; military involvement in elite sports; facility management; and the promotion of health through sports.
