Chapter 12 in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 178-193 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The armed forces are an important component in many countries’ elite sport support systems, as they employ numerous athletes under special contracts that provide excellent conditions for training and competing. In this chapter, we use the armed forces as an example to explore central government's impact on national sport policy and to show how public goals and public funding affect sport policymaking. To this end, we discuss relevant concepts and present the SPLISS model as a valuable framework for analyzing national sport systems. We then describe athlete support programmes within the armed forces of France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland to illustrate how public actors in competitive sporting nations support elite athletes.
