Non-profit sector
Emmanuel Bayle
A chapter in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 7-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The first part of this Handbook introduces the non-profit sector, emphasizing the interactions between international and national sport. Key stakeholders are discussed, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), international sport federations, national Olympic committees, national sport federations and sport clubs. These organizations create the environment in which sport takes place by regulating their sport and disciplines, organizing competitions, supporting their athletes and promoting broad and active participation. To achieve their goals, they develop strategies, seek human and financial resources from various stakeholder groups, and position themselves in the sport system alongside private entities such as fitness and leisure companies. In order to remain competitive in the long term, they must adapt constantly to societal and sporting needs, as well as management requirements related to good governance, performance management, professionalization and diversity — important issues that will be addressed in the following chapters of Part I.
