Digitalization in voluntary sport clubs
Marcel Fahrner
Chapter 17 in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 266-281 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on digitalization as a megatrend in contemporary society and its associated structural challenges for voluntary sport clubs (VSCs). By referring to different forms of digitalization (e.g., digital transformation and disruption), it examines the reasons why VSCs digitalize their operations and describes digitalization's impacts on the conditions in which VSCs make and implement decisions. It pays particular attention to digitalization options relating to VSCs’ decision-making procedures, paid and voluntary staff, communication channels and interfaces with their environment. It also outlines digitalization's potential intended and unintended impacts on the structure of VSCs. Based on these organizational reflections, the chapter also discusses the managerial challenges digitalization creates for VSCs’ paid and volunteer leaders, notably the need for them to have or acquire digital literacy skills.
