Sustainable sport tourism management in mountain areas

Chapter 18 in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 282-299 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
As the sport tourism market becomes more competitive, visitors and other stakeholders are becoming more demanding, and the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible and tangible. Managers of sport tourism destinations in the Alps must confront such challenges and find sustainable development solutions. This requirement goes beyond merely adapting to the effects of climate change, as tourism managers must develop innovative, participatory and nature-friendly concepts, as well as task-related cooperative approaches to support the sustainable development of mountain areas. Moreover, they must take a longer-term perspective and actively manage their stakeholders. Major issues and challenges such as these require significant transformations and a shift from quantitative to qualitative growth. Implementing the necessary changes within a reasonable period will give destinations great opportunities for positioning themselves as responsible and progressive actors. However, an often short-term perspective when evaluating performance in operational management makes such change difficult.
