Strategic management and performance of non-profit sport organizations

Michaël Mrkonjic, Josephine Clausen and Emmanuel Bayle

Chapter 3 in Sport Management in Europe, 2025, pp 25-42 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Striving for organizational success in complex environmental dynamics, strategic management is an essential process for non-profit sport organizations. It is intrinsically linked to the way in which the organization perceives the performance it wishes to achieve. To help sport managers anchor their practices, this chapter begins with a description of the main elements of strategic thinking. On this basis, it proposes a selection of basic strategic management models and instruments that can guide them to analyze their internal and external environments. As performance can be defined and measured in different ways, this chapter proposes and discusses different options which can be combined with strategic management approaches. The insight-interview with the president of a Swiss national sport federation challenges the transfer from theory to practice. It highlights that deploying strategic management in a non-profit sport organization is a strategic decision and that building a common understanding within is crucial. This chapter concludes by presenting typical European and national non-profit sport organizations that have developed and implemented strategic plans and objectives and a series of recommendations that can help sport managers with reaching organizational performance.
