Abstract:
Non-profit sport organizations cannot operate without human resources. In sport clubs and sport federations, these human resources increasingly include paid staff, as well as volunteers, even though voluntary work remains a vital resource for clubs offering sport and social services to members. Consequently, recruiting and retaining volunteers is a major concern for sport clubs, which often find it hard to attract and retain sufficient volunteers in formal and long-term positions. The present chapter provides an overview of the main human resource management (HRM) issues non-profit sport organizations currently face — notably resource planning, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and leadership, motivation and reward management and satisfaction and commitment — and offers practical examples and recommendations for volunteer management in sport clubs.
