Abstract:
Changing demographics and the increasingly heterogeneous nature of modern societies often arouse negative reactions such as discrimination, exclusion and resistance to diversity. It is vital for sport organizations to counter these negative reactions and overcome inequality by embracing diversity and adopting positive attitudes and processes, notably tolerance and inclusion. This chapter introduces the concept of diversity and describes a theoretical model that outlines the various dimensions of diversity from both the athlete's and the sport employee's perspective. We then draw on this model to introduce current paradigms of diversity management (DiM) in sport organizations and to highlight the benefits of diversity. We conclude by presenting six good-practice maxims for effective DiM and an interview with a diversity manager, who provides insights into the competencies sport organization managers must acquire if they wish to pursue a career in DiM.
