Abstract:
This chapter examines the regulation and management of professional sport leagues, focusing on Swiss professional football. Given sport leagues’ unique economic and competitive characteristics, they require carefully formulated regulations to maintain their competitive balance and financial sustainability. The chapter presents the economic, legal, political and social dimensions of Swiss football's multifaceted regulatory framework and critically assesses key mechanisms such as revenue sharing, financial sustainability and club licensing regulations that have been introduced to ensure clubs’ financial viability and a balanced competitive landscape. Drawing on theoretical models and real-world examples, this analysis offers insights into regulatory policies’ broader implications for the long-term health and competitiveness of sport leagues. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on sport governance, providing valuable guidance for sport managers, students and practitioners.
