Regional and national domestic rankings

Ellen Boeren

Chapter 10 in How to Read and Interpret University Rankings, 2026, pp 119-132 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: International ranking compilers QS and THE do not only publish international rankings but have developed a portfolio of regional rankings. These league tables cover distinct geographical locations across the world, from Latin America to Asia, but also come with their own methodologies and sets of indicators. This chapter introduces the reader to the specificities of such rankings, including the THE Sub-Saharan Africa Ranking compiled with support from the World Bank. Apart from regional rankings produced by THE and QS, this chapter signposts the reader to a variation of national rankings as published by newspapers, magazines and governments in distinct countries across the world. Examples are drawn from Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, and Australia. Through engagement with these domestic rankings, it showcases their focus on teaching and learning metrics as tools to inform prospective students within the country.
