Reflections and conclusions
Ellen Boeren
Chapter 12 in How to Read and Interpret University Rankings, 2026, pp 147-153 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The final chapter is used to reflect on the different themes discussed throughout the distinct chapters of the book. It looks back at the core insights on a chapter-by-chapter basis, before presenting some concluding thoughts. It reminds readers of the core issues to look out for when consulting league table data, covering the whole spectrum from research to teaching indicators and aspects of internationalisation and sustainability. It encourages the reader to consult future releases of university rankings in parallel to its methodological guides. The chapter also reiterates the advice to use ranking insights in triangulation with other information sources. Ultimately, such approaches will allow the reader to develop their own judgements on the usability of rankings and whether these are aligned with their initial needs for consulting them in the first place.
