How to navigate metrics on teaching and learning?

Ellen Boeren

Chapter 5 in How to Read and Interpret University Rankings, 2026, pp 58-69 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: International university rankings receive ongoing criticisms that they favour research over teaching indicators. The focus on teaching and learning is indeed sparse in QS and Shanghai, which pay stronger attention to reputation and bibliometrics. This chapter introduces the reader to the use of a range of teaching and learning indicators in THE, zooming in on staff-student ratios, doctorate-bachelor ratios, and doctorate-staff ratios. It will also mention THE's development of a new Online Learning Ranking, showcasing the need to capture trends in the international higher education landscape, accelerated by critical junctures such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The final section of the chapter provides a case study on the use of teaching and learning metrics in a national ranking, as these tend to be compiled as study guides for prospective bachelor students.
