How to interpret employment and industry indicators?
Ellen Boeren
Chapter 6 in How to Read and Interpret University Rankings, 2026, pp 70-81 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the reader to the use of employment and industry indicators in the leading international university rankings. Following on from the chapter on ‘reputation’, it discusses QS's additional interest in employment outcomes. It also provides details on the Global Employability Ranking and Survey (GEURS), produced by consultancy company ‘Emerging’ in cooperation with THE. The focus on rankings is supplemented by several alternative sources that can be used to triangulate insights on universities’ employability performances. This includes the online platform LinkedIn, which hosts millions of employment details of university graduates. The latter part of the chapter unpacks the role of industry income in the THE rankings, underlining the potential of cooperation between companies and universities. It also explains the role of patents in industry innovation and the role of research in developing such new innovations.
