How to judge universities’ international profile?
Ellen Boeren
Chapter 8 in How to Read and Interpret University Rankings, 2026, pp 97-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
International ranking compilers include indicators to judge universities’ international profiles. The QS Global Engagement Lens contains indicators that measure the ratio between international versus domestic staff and students. It also zooms in on international collaboration in research through joint authorship of publications. Such focus on international co-production of research is also present in the THE and Shanghai Rankings. This chapter presents an overview of international indicators and does this against the contextual background of an expanded global higher education sector in recent decades. Apart from the production of generic and subject rankings, their compilers have developed a wider interest in capturing the state-of-the-art of the international student market. To this end, this chapter additionally introduces the reader to the QS Best Student Cities Ranking, which provides insights into cities’ attractiveness on indicators such as employment opportunities, accommodation, and safety.
